Federal Cabinet to Review and Approve 27th Amendment Draft on Friday

The Federal Cabinet to Review and Approve 27th Amendment Draft on Friday as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is set to chair a key meeting where the proposed constitutional amendment will be discussed and finalized, sources confirmed on Thursday. The amendment, which has sparked nationwide political consultations, is expected to bring significant changes to governance and provincial accountability structures.

According to reports, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Central Committee is also holding its meeting on Thursday to gather views from senior leaders regarding the 27th Amendment, which addresses a wide range of political and administrative reforms.

State Minister for Law and Justice Barrister Aqeel Malik, speaking to a private TV channel, stated that ensuring accountability of the provinces is equally crucial, as the federal government shoulders most of the financial responsibilities. He emphasized that “the Constitution is not a sacred text and can be amended according to time and necessity.”

Meanwhile, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement–Pakistan (MQM-P) delegation met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday, urging the inclusion of provisions in the 27th Amendment that would empower local governments with more authority and autonomy. The party reiterated its stance that local governance should be legally protected to strengthen democratic decentralization.

A day earlier, MQM-P leader Farooq Sattar had remarked that “no one should be shocked or worried” about the proposed amendment, assuring that it aims to enhance transparency and efficiency in governance rather than disrupt existing systems.

Separately, Pakistan Muslim League–Q (PML-Q) leaders also met the prime minister to discuss political and constitutional developments linked to the proposed changes. With all major parties engaged in consultations, the upcoming cabinet session on Friday will be crucial in determining the final shape of the 27th Constitutional Amendment.

Federal Cabinet to Review and Approve 27th Amendment Draft on Friday is likely to mark a pivotal moment in Pakistan’s evolving constitutional and governance framework.
