ISLAMABAD: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has issued summons to key members of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) regarding a controversial post made by Imran Khan on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) concerning the events of 1971.
Umar Ayub, Barrister Gohar Khan, and Rauf Hassan have been called for questioning on Tuesday at 11 am. The inquiry, led by the FIA’s Cyber Wing, focuses on the alleged illegal use of Imran Khan’s social media account to disseminate a video that may have incited public unrest.
The video, uploaded on May 26, reportedly addressed the findings of the Hamoodur Rahman Commission Report, suggesting a provocative statement regarding the responsibility for the 1971 breakup of Pakistan. Sources within the FIA have indicated that the video aimed to attribute blame to General Yahya Khan, accusing the Pakistani military of misconduct during the conflict.
Moreover, the post from Imran Khan’s official account on platform X included imagery of current civilian and military leaders, implying their involvement in undermining PTI’s electoral mandate.
In response to the controversy, Barrister Gohar Ali Khan clarified that the post should be understood within a political context and was not intended to target the military. He emphasized that the comparison drawn with the events of 1971 was political in nature.
However, Imran Khan has refused to meet with the FIA team investigating the matter. Citing the absence of his lawyers, Khan declined the meeting. Instead, he provided a written response to the FIA team, highlighting his position on the issue.
