ISLAMABAD: The lawyer of social worker Sarim Burney on Monday said the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) made ‘baseless’ allegations against his client in a human trafficking case. Burney was taken into custody on June 5 after landing at Jinnah International Airport in Karachi following his visit to the United States.
Judicial Magistrate Karachi East heard Sarim Burney’s plea for bail in the human trafficking case. Burney’s lawyer argued that the FIA made baseless allegations without a proper investigation. He explained that the toddler was left at the hospital by the parents themselves. Now, allegations of receiving Rs 3 million are being raised.
The lawyer stated that the adoption of children follows a designated process. He said the FIA failed to prove its allegations. The court has summoned a response from the FIA on the bail plea of Sarim Burney.
The FIA registered a first information report (FIR) against Sarim Burney. They accused him of trafficking newborn babies to the US. The FIR alleges that Burney trafficked a newborn named Haya to the US. The investigation agency claims Haya was bought from her parents for Rs 1 million. Burney is accused of trafficking 20 newborns to the US over the past year under the pretext of adoption. The FIA claims that 15 of the trafficked children were girls.
