Pakistan, assumed the Presidency of the United Nations Security Council this month and hosted a high-level reception to commemorate the occasion. While addressing the gathering, Deputy Prime Minister/ Foreign Minister, Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar reiterated Pakistan’s steadfast commitment to multilateralism, peaceful dispute resolution, and adherence to the principles of the UN Charter.
According to Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Senator Dar emphasized that the foundational values of the United Nations such as peaceful settlement of disputes and non-use of force remain central to Pakistan’s foreign policy. He stated concern over the growing global instability and mentioned the consequences of unresolved conflicts, unilateralism, and disregard for international law. In this context, he highlighted Pakistan’s belief that sustainable global peace and security can only be achieved through inclusive dialogue, international cooperation, and respect for international norms.
Outlining the priorities of Pakistan’s Security Council Presidency, Senator Dar identified three key focus areas such as; peaceful settlement of disputes as a cornerstone of the UN Charter, this principle was reaffirmed through a high-level debate and the unanimous adoption of Resolution 2788 earlier in the day. The second was strengthening multilateralism in which Senator Dar stressed that multilateralism is not a mere slogan but a global necessity. He called for a Security Council that is proactive, preventive, and principled in its leadership. And the third one was enhanced cooperation with regional organizations in which he ephasized collaboration with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Senator Dar noted its crucial role in global peacebuilding and highlighted the upcoming Security Council briefing with the OIC scheduled for 24 July.
Moreover, Senator Dar reiterated Pakistan’s active engagement across the UN system, not just in the Security Council but in the General Assembly, ECOSOC, and beyond. He underlined Pakistan’s contributions to climate action, sustainable development, and the promotion of the three pillars of the United Nations: peace and security, development, and human rights.
He also announced Pakistan’s candidature for the Human Rights Council for the 2026–2028 term. Pakistan’s approach to human rights, he said, is guided by the principle of “TRUCE” – Tolerance, Respect, Universality, Consensus-building, and Engagement. The candidature has already received endorsement from the Asia-Pacific Group.
Senator Dar called for global unity in the face of intensifying challenges. “In a world facing deepening divisions and mounting challenges, we must choose cooperation over confrontation, and diplomacy over force,” he said. “Pakistan stands ready to work with all of you to advance these common goals.”
