Free transport in Punjab is set to begin in 17 districts as the provincial government moves to reduce travel costs for the public. The decision came during a meeting led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, where officials reviewed the impact of rising fuel prices on daily commuters.
The plan for free transport in Punjab will start with pilot projects in Gujranwala, Multan, and Sialkot. Authorities have also been asked to quickly assess transport fares per kilometer to support future policy decisions. The move is part of a wider strategy to offer direct relief to citizens facing inflation.
During the meeting, officials also reviewed prices of essential food items across all districts, including Lahore. Items such as onions, tomatoes, potatoes, bananas, and pulses were discussed in detail. The government noted that flour prices in Punjab remain lower than in other provinces, while stocks of key food items are stable.
The chief minister directed departments to keep strict control over prices and take action against hoarding. Authorities were also told to regulate LPG rates and ensure that essential goods are sold at official prices. Citizens were advised not to buy items at inflated rates.
Alongside free transport in Punjab, the government is focusing on improving public services. Maryam Nawaz expressed concern over deaths linked to open drainage and ordered immediate surveys of stagnant water areas. Officials must submit daily reports with photos to ensure safety measures are in place.
The meeting also covered sanitation, tree plantation, and city beautification. Progress in several cities was reviewed, with a deadline set for completing development work by June. While improvements in some areas were appreciated, concerns were raised about cleanliness in certain districts, with strict timelines given for better results.
To strengthen monitoring, the government has introduced digital mapping with AI support to track sanitation workers in real time. Cleanliness drives under the Suthra Punjab program are also being expanded, including in graveyards.
With free transport in Punjab and other relief steps, the government aims to make daily life easier for citizens while tackling inflation and improving urban conditions.
