The Frontier Works Organization (FWO) has successfully completed the Jaglot-Skardu Road, transforming a grueling 13-hour journey into a quick three-hour drive. The 167-kilometer highway now connects major urban centers in Gilgit-Baltistan through terrain that was once extremely difficult to navigate.
Initially, the project was awarded to an international contractor in 2015 at a cost of PKR 52 billion. However, delays and implementation issues halted progress. In 2017, FWO took over the project and completed it for PKR 31 billion, significantly reducing costs. The road includes 28 bridges and 484 culverts, ensuring smooth connectivity across challenging landscapes.
Building the Jaglot-Skardu Road required advanced engineering expertise. The highway’s alignment along natural fault lines and its exposure to seasonal mud floods posed serious challenges. The National Highway Authority has pinpointed 11 critical areas along the route that need additional safety measures. These include the construction of tunnels and protective shelters.
The construction and maintenance phases were not without loss. Tragically, 20 personnel sacrificed their lives to bring the project to completion. Today, FWO continues to maintain the road, spending PKR 600 million annually on its upkeep.
The road extends three kilometers beyond its original plan of 164 kilometers to improve public access. This extension demonstrates FWO’s commitment to enhancing the region’s connectivity. The completed Jaglot-Skardu Road is seen as a significant achievement for the Gilgit-Baltistan region.
The highway traverses mountainous terrain prone to geological and weather-related hazards. Natural water channels and environmental factors often trigger mud floods along the route. These conditions make ongoing maintenance and safety enhancements essential.
Local authorities expect this improved infrastructure to drive regional development and increase accessibility. While specific data on the economic impact is yet to be compiled, the project is hailed as a milestone in northern Pakistan’s transportation network. The Jaglot-Skardu Road stands as a testament to FWO’s dedication and expertise in challenging conditions.
