GILGIT: The Gilgit-Baltistan government has allocated a budget of Rs 140.46 million for print media advertisements for the fiscal year 2023-24.
According to the Information Department of Gilgit-Baltistan (IDGB), regional weekly newspapers received Rs 9.59 million, regional daily newspapers were allotted Rs 68.32 million, and national newspapers were granted Rs 62.55 million during this period. The funds were distributed among 10 regional weeklies, 21 regional dailies, and 21 national dailies.
The IDGB highlighted the ongoing preference for print media in government advertising, noting its role in supporting the industry and providing employment opportunities for journalists. However, the department also expressed concerns about the influx of individuals from outside regions into the Gilgit-Baltistan print media sector, leading to a significant increase in local newspapers from 6 to 36.
In response to demands from journalists, the IDGB has developed a comprehensive policy aimed at promoting positive journalism, curbing the spread of dummy newspapers, and ensuring employment for local journalists. The policy requires national newspapers to establish bureau offices in Gilgit-Baltistan and provide job opportunities to local journalists.
IDGB Director Shams Qureshsi stated that the department has taken steps to ensure the effective use of the allocated funds, including visiting local newspaper offices to review legal compliance. Some newspapers were found to be non-compliant and have been temporarily removed from the media list until they rectify their documentation by October 2024.
Qureshsi also mentioned that many newspapers needed to renew their ABC certification and improve their operational setups, including staffing. Based on these findings, the IDGB has formulated recommendations for sustainable solutions to enhance the media industry and support working journalists.
