Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan’s most picturesque region, has earned a spot on CNN’s list of the top 25 destinations to visit in 2025. The US-based broadcaster highlighted the area’s unmatched beauty and allure.
CNN Travel described the region, nestled in the Karakoram Mountains, as a challenging yet rewarding destination. “The Gilgit Baltistan region isn’t the easiest place to reach. Flights can be unpredictable, and roads may be closed seasonally,” the publication stated. “However, it boasts more breathtaking peaks than a lemon meringue pie.”
The article emphasized the region’s significance as home to five of the 14 “eight-thousander” peaks, the world’s tallest mountains. Among them is K2, the second-highest peak globally and widely regarded as the most dangerous and difficult to climb.
In terms of adventure and infrastructure, CNN Travel noted that hiking in Gilgit Baltistan surpasses the Himalayas in its level of difficulty and thrill. Each year, thousands of local and international tourists visit the northern region. They participate in mountaineering expeditions, trekking, paragliding, and other sports.
In 2024, the area saw a notable rise in mountaineering activities, the Alpine Club of Pakistan reported. Unfortunately, nine climbers lost their lives while scaling various peaks. The victims included five Japanese climbers, two Pakistanis, and one each from Russia and Brazil.
Despite its challenges, Gilgit Baltistan continues to be a magnet for adventurers and nature lovers. Its majestic mountains and scenic landscapes make it a must-visit destination for 2025.
