ISLAMABAD – The government has announced the formation of a 10-member joint task force (JTF) to tackle malicious propaganda targeting the state. The initiative, approved by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, focuses on identifying individuals, groups, and organizations responsible for spreading fake and misleading information.
Objective to Counter Misinformation
The task force has been established in response to recent incidents of terrorism, vandalism, and a wave of false narratives aimed at undermining the state. According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, these campaigns are designed to provoke unrest and exploit provincial and ethnic divisions for political gain.
“Multiple media platforms, both domestic and international, are being misused to disseminate baseless and inflammatory content against the state and security forces,” the statement read.
10-Day Deadline for Findings
The JTF has been directed to deliver its findings within 10 days. It aims to swiftly identify the perpetrators and ensure they are brought to justice.
Task Force Composition
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) chairman will lead the task force. Key members include representatives from:
- Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI)
- Military Intelligence (MI)
- Intelligence Bureau (IB)
- Cyber Crimes Wing of the FIA
- Islamabad Police DIG
- IT Ministry
- Interior and Information Ministries
Additional officers may be added as needed to support the investigation.
Key Responsibilities
The JTF is tasked with:
- Identifying individuals and organizations behind the production and spread of fake information related to political events in Islamabad from November 24–27.
- Tracking and tracing those involved, whether within Pakistan or abroad.
- Proposing solutions to address gaps in policy and mitigate future misinformation campaigns.
Government Accuses PTI of Spreading Misinformation
The government has accused the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) of fueling unrest and violence, particularly during the May 9 events and subsequent protests. Officials claim PTI has been using false narratives to destabilize the country.
Former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party has been actively rallying for his release from Adiala Jail. Last week’s protest in Islamabad is the latest in a series of demonstrations led by the PTI.
