ISLAMABAD: Following the Prime Minister’s directive, a cabinet committee has been established to investigate the tragic events that unfolded on May 9, 2023.
In a notification issued by the Cabinet Division on Saturday, the committee’s purpose is to analyze the causes of the events, determine responsibility, and assess both immediate and long-term implications. Caretaker Federal Minister for Law and Justice, Ahmad Irfan, will lead the committee, with other members including the ministers of interior, information and broadcasting, and human rights.
The committee, as per its terms of reference, is tasked with examining the events leading up to the incidents of May 9, 2023, identifying the mastermind, planners, facilitators, and executors. It will propose preventive measures to avoid a recurrence of such breaches of national security and recommend ways to enhance the existing legal framework to discourage similar incidents.
The Ministry of Interior will provide secretarial support to the committee, which is expected to submit its report to the federal cabinet within 14 days. The notification also allows for the addition of a new member if needed to address any challenges.
The backdrop of these investigations is the widespread protests that erupted across Pakistan following the arrest of PTI leader Imran Khan on May 9, 2023. The protests, held in various cities, saw PTI workers expressing their discontent, leading to attacks on army installations, including the Corps Commander’s house in Lahore.
