ISLAMABAD: In a bid to address the growing transition to solar energy and its impact on grid electricity demand, the federal government has announced a reduction in the per-unit price of solar electricity. The new rates will range from Rs 7.5 to Rs 11 per unit, down from the current rate of Rs 21 per unit for net-metered solar energy.
The adjustment reflects declining global prices of solar panels and aims to maintain grid demand while addressing IMF concerns about the financial burden on those unable to afford solar installations.
The proposal, if enacted, would lower compensation rates for excess electricity fed back into the grid by rooftop solar users. While this could discourage new solar panel installations, it is also expected to ease capacity payment obligations on the grid system.
The move comes amidst broader discussions about energy sustainability and affordability, as the government navigates fiscal pressures and increasing adoption of renewable energy solutions.
