President Asif Ali Zardari approved the appointment of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir on December 4. This groundbreaking five-year position was created under the 27th Constitutional Amendment. The role replaces the abolished Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, streamlining command and boosting strategic defence capabilities. Field Marshal Munir will simultaneously serve as Chief of Army Staff, strengthening unified decision-making.
Air Chief Sidhu Granted Extension
In a related development, President Zardari approved a two-year extension for Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu, effective March 2026. The extension ensures continuity in Pakistan’s air defence leadership.
Field Marshal Asim Munir expressed confidence in Pakistan’s future, stating that the country is “moving in the right direction” and is ready to “soar to greater heights.
