Karachi: Rescue teams have recovered 1.5 kilograms of gold worth more than Rs600 million from a shop at Gul Plaza, which was affected by the recent tragic incident. The gold was found during an ongoing search operation and has been safely handed over to the shop’s owner, officials confirmed on Thursday.
According to rescue authorities, search operations are still underway at Gul Plaza in Karachi. During the operation, rescue personnel recovered the gold in intact condition from a shop located inside the building.
Officials said the recovered gold jewellery was submerged in water but remained undamaged. The shop owner expressed relief, stating that all his belongings were returned safely, and thanked the administration and rescue teams for their efforts.
Rescue 1122 spokesperson Hassan Ali, while speaking to the media, said that the basement of Gul Plaza is being searched again. He added that some cash was also recovered earlier and handed over to the administration. Additionally, parts of a DVR system were found in the control room, and its hard disk is currently being examined.
Deputy Commissioner South Javed Nabi confirmed that the gold recovered from Gul Plaza is worth over Rs600 million and has been returned to the market administration. He said that around 90% of the building has been cleared, and the search operation is expected to be completed by tonight.
The DC South further stated that debris is being removed carefully from sensitive areas, while efforts are ongoing to locate 10 to 11 missing persons. He added that a list of 82 individuals has been compiled, and anyone with missing relatives should report to the authorities. So far, 71 bodies have been recovered from the site.
