GAZA STRIPE: Hamas has praised Russia and China for blocking the United States led Gaza ceasefire resolution at the the United Nations (UN) Security Council.
Both Russia and China vetoed the resolution, which was aimed at supporting an “immediate and sustained ceasefire” and also condemned the Hamas on October 7 last year.
Hamas expressed gratitude towards Russia, China, and Algeria for rejecting what they described as a biased American resolution that they believed favored Israel. They argued that the resolution would provide Israel with cover to carry out what they termed as a genocidal war against the Palestinian people in Gaza.
Algeria, currently a member of the Security Council, also voted against the resolution and has co-sponsored a new, tougher draft, which is expected to be voted on soon, but it risks facing a US veto.
US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, criticized the veto by China and Russia, describing it as a cynical move. He emphasized that the US-backed resolution aimed to urge the international community to act urgently in securing a ceasefire.
“We express our appreciation for the position of Russia, China and Algeria who rejected the biased American resolution of aggression against our people,” Hamas said in a statement.
