Eleven police officers, including Deputy Superintendent of Police Diyar Khan, were martyred late Tuesday when terrorists stormed the Khazina Banda checkpoint in Hangu district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, according to police officials.
A police spokesperson said officers mounted fierce resistance as the assault unfolded. During the exchange of gunfire that followed, 11 personnel, including DSP Khan, lost their lives, while security forces killed 15 militants in return.
Hangu Police Checkpost Attack Leaves Dozens Injured
District Police Officer Mujahid Hussain reported that 28 police personnel sustained injuries in the confrontation. The wounded were transported to a nearby hospital, where they continue to receive treatment.
Militants belonging to Fitna al-Khawarij set fire to three police vehicles during the raid and made off with a fourth. Police said the operation to clear the area of remaining attackers is still in progress, with security forces having sealed off the surrounding area and stepping up search efforts.
Senior police officials said the injured are receiving the best available medical care and vowed that the sacrifices made by the fallen officers would not go to waste. Those killed in the Hangu police checkpost attack were laid to rest in funerals attended by large crowds, including fellow officers.
Interior Minister Condemns the Attack
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi issued a statement on Wednesday condemning the assault on the Hangu checkpost. He said the policemen displayed exceptional bravery in foiling the designs of Fitna al-Khawarij, ultimately paying for it with their lives.
Naqvi paid tribute to the martyred officers and conveyed his condolences to their grieving families, while also praying for the swift recovery of those wounded in the attack. He further remarked that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police remains at the forefront of the fight against terrorism, saluting what he called their unwavering sacrifice.
