A fierce clash in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has once again put the spotlight on the ongoing Hangu security forces operation, with the military confirming that eight fighters from the India-backed Fitna al-Khawarij network were killed, while six Pakistan Army soldiers lost their lives in the exchange.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the armed forces’ media wing, announced on Sunday that the confrontation broke out when a security convoy came under fire from militants in Hangu district. Troops responded swiftly, and the effective engagement resulted in the deaths of eight terrorists.
Second Deadly Clash Within Days
This latest Hangu security forces operation comes just days after a separate string of confrontations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa between September 15 and 17, in which ten Fitna al-Khawarij militants were neutralized. That earlier round of fighting had already cost the lives of six soldiers, as ISPR had disclosed the previous Thursday.
Military officials noted that clearance operations are continuing in the affected areas to track down and eliminate any militants who may still be hiding nearby.
Officers Among the Martyred
Among the six personnel who embraced martyrdom in the most recent fighting were Captain Abuzar Farooq and Lieutenant Sheraz Babar, both of whom were reportedly leading their units from the front lines when they fell. ISPR described their conduct as an act of exceptional courage under fire.
The statement reaffirmed that Pakistan’s broader counter-terrorism drive, run under the banner of Azm-e-Istehkam, remains fully active. This campaign was sanctioned by the Federal Apex Committee as part of the National Action Plan and is aimed squarely at rooting out terrorism backed by foreign actors operating inside Pakistani territory.
ISPR added that the losses suffered by the troops have only strengthened the resolve of the armed forces to protect the nation from such threats.
Rising Violence in KP and Balochistan
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa terrorism crisis has escalated sharply since 2021, when the Afghan Taliban seized power in neighboring Afghanistan, a shift that analysts widely link to increased cross-border militant activity.
Data compiled by the Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) shows that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan have become the epicenters of unrest nationwide. During the second quarter of 2026 alone, these two provinces accounted for roughly 96% of all violence-linked deaths recorded across the country.
Breaking down the toll, KP alone was responsible for more than 61% of fatalities — 475 deaths — making it the hardest-hit province in the country. Balochistan followed with 265 deaths, or about 34% of the national total.
In terms of sheer frequency, KP also topped the list with 151 violent incidents, representing 57% of all such cases nationwide. Balochistan recorded 94 incidents, or 35%, further confirming that these two regions remain the primary battlegrounds in Pakistan’s fight against militancy.
As the ISPR Pakistan Army continues its offensive under Azm-e-Istehkam, officials maintain that operations like the one in Hangu are critical to reversing this trend and restoring stability to the region.
