Pakpattan: A tragic case of hospital negligence in Pakpattan has led to the arrest of two senior health officials. On Saturday, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz visited the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital and ordered strict action.
During her surprise visit, she instructed the police to arrest MS Dr Adnan Ghaffar and CEO Health Dr Sohail. Both were taken into custody directly from the hospital premises.
Government sources revealed that the two officials tried to hide facts related to the deaths of 20 children. A formal police complaint has now been registered against them.
The children died between June 16 and June 22. The incident sparked public anger. Families of the deceased blamed doctors and hospital staff for medical malpractice. They also alleged that there was a shortage of oxygen cylinders.
However, initial findings tell a different story. Reports from the Punjab Health Department and the Commissioner of Sahiwal revealed fresh details. According to sources, 15 children were already in critical condition. They had been born in private hospitals and later brought to the DHQ facility.
Five other deaths were caused by mishandled deliveries. These were carried out by untrained midwives. Officials added that none of the mothers were brought along during the transfers. This made treatment more difficult.
Authorities have sealed three private hospitals as part of the investigation. Contrary to early reports, no oxygen shortage was found. Investigators confirmed that 45 oxygen cylinders were available at the time. A full clinical audit was done. It included every child’s arrival and treatment record.
The Punjab government accused the MS and his team of healthcare failure. Officials claimed they tried to cover up the real reasons behind the deaths. This act of clinical misconduct led to immediate action from the chief minister.
Maryam Nawaz declared that no one will escape accountability. She said medical carelessness would not be allowed in public hospitals. The chief minister stressed that hospital negligence in any form would be dealt with firmly.
