DUBAI: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has responded after reports emerged that Pakistan may decide not to play against India during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
In an official statement, the ICC said it has taken notice of the message reportedly issued by the Government of Pakistan regarding Pakistan team’s participation in the tournament.
The ICC stated that it is now waiting for a formal decision from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
However, the ICC stressed that such a stance does not align with the basic concept of a global sports event, where all qualified teams are expected to compete on an equal basis according to the tournament schedule.
The ICC added that its tournaments are based on the principles of integrity, competitiveness, continuity, and fairness.
While the ICC said it respects the role of governments in national policy matters, it noted that such a decision would not be in the best interest of international cricket or global fans — including millions of supporters in Pakistan.
The ICC further said it hopes the PCB will seriously consider the long-term impact of any such decision, as it could negatively affect the international cricket system, of which PCB is an important member and beneficiary.
The ICC reiterated that its top priority is the successful conduct of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, and that this responsibility lies with all member boards, including the PCB.
The ICC also expressed hope that the PCB will work with relevant stakeholders to find a mutually acceptable solution that protects the interests of all parties.
