ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) dismissed Khawar Maneka’s review plea on Tuesday in the Bushra Bibi-Imran Khan Nikah case.
Maneka challenged the IHC’s verdict requiring the appeal on the Nikah case to be decided within a month. Justice Gul Hasan Aurangzeb pronounced the reserved verdict.
In June, the IHC ordered the session court to announce its verdict on Bushra Bibi’s plea seeking suspension of conviction in the Nikah case within a month. The IHC directed session court judge Afzal Majoka to decide on both pleas in the case within the specified timeframe.
Imran Khan – Bushra Bibi Marriage
Former Prime Minister Imran Khan married Bushra Bibi in February 2018 in Lahore. The ceremony was attended by close relatives, including the bride’s mother and friends, though Khan’s sisters were not present. Mufti Saeed performed the Nikah in the presence of former PTI leader Awn Chaudhary and former SAPM Zulfi Bukhari, who acted as witnesses.
Legal Challenge
Last year, Khawar Maneka, Bibi’s former husband, approached the court, claiming the marriage was illegal and against Sharia law. He alleged that Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi married during the three-month “iddat period” following her divorce, accusing them of fornication.
Sentence
Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were sentenced to seven years imprisonment in the ‘un-Islamic’ iddat case. Judge Qudratullah announced the reserved verdict, sentencing both the PTI founder and his wife to seven years in prison and a fine of Rs 500,000 each.
