The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has urged the federal government in Islamabad to implement a sales tax on petrol, proposing an 18 percent tax rate. Additionally, the IMF recommends removing sales tax exemptions on all items, including petrol.
In line with IMF suggestions, the federal government is gearing up to introduce measures that could increase the burden on electricity consumers by approximately 967 billion rupees.
Media reports indicate that six government-owned electricity distribution companies have filed petitions with the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) seeking approval for raising electricity prices in the upcoming financial year. The petitions are slated for a hearing on April 2.
