LAHORE: Jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan has approached the Lahore High Court seeking protection against potential army custody in cases related to the May 9 incidents.
Imran Khan has been incarcerated at Adiala Jail for almost a year and faces over 200 cases. He is on physical remand in connection with 12 cases related to the May 9 incidents and corruption cases, including the Toshakhana case.
The former premier, through his lawyer Uzair Karamat Bhandari, filed a petition in the High Court, naming the federal government and the Inspector Generals of Police of all four provinces as respondents.
In his petition, Khan expressed concerns about the possibility of being handed over to the army in connection with the May 9 cases. He argued that any potential arrest should be made by civilian courts and requested the court to issue an order preventing his transfer to military custody.
It is pertinent to mention that Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi were arrested by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and FIA in connection with police cases related to the May 9 riots and corruption charges. This followed a district and session court’s verdict quashing their sentences in an illegal marriage case, the only remaining case in which they were serving jail terms.
