ISLAMABAD: The founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan has been barred from holding meetings inside Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail for a period of two weeks, media reports say.
This development arises a day after PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar filed a plea in court seeking to meet with Iman Khan.
Imran Khan, who was transferred to Adiala jail in September 2023 from Attock jail, is serving a combined sentence of 31 years in multiple cases. Previously, authorities had designated Mondays and Thursdays for meetings with his lawyers, party members, and family during his incarceration.
The former prime minister, along with former Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, received a 10-year sentence each in the cipher case in January for disclosing contents of a confidential cable sent by the country’s ambassador in Washington to the Islamabad government.
In addition, Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, were sentenced to 14 years by an accountability court in the Toshakhana reference for allegedly misusing his premiership from 2018 to 2022 to trade gifts in state possession, received during foreign visits, valued at more than Rs140 million ($635,000). The court also imposed a fine of Rs1.57 billion on the couple.
Subsequently, Khan and Bushra were handed another seven-year sentence each, along with a Rs500,000 penalty, in the “un-Islamic nikah” case for marrying before the completion of the 90-day iddat period following Bushra’s divorce.
Additionally, Khan and his wife were indicted in the £190 million case during the jail trial conducted at Adiala jail.
PTI and its allies have repeatedly called for Khan’s release from what they term as “fabricated” cases, expressing concerns for his safety while incarcerated.
