LAHORE: Former Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday approached to the Lahore High Court against his jail trial and the contempt case filed by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). The petition, presented by Salman Akram Raja and Barrister Sameer Khosa, names the federal government, ECP, and the superintendent of Adiala Jail as respondents.
The petitioner argues that the ECP lacks the authority to initiate contempt proceedings and highlights that the ECP has already decided to conduct a jail trial in this matter. Emphasizing that holding a jail trial in secret goes against Article 4, the petition seeks the Lahore High Court’s intervention to ensure a fair and transparent trial. The petitioner is scheduled to be indicted on December 13 in jail, a move contested in the petition.
The plea urges the LHC to order a free and fair trial while declaring the jail trial null and void. Additionally, it seeks a directive to the ECP to cease any action against the petitioner.
