Independence Day marks the 78th celebration of Pakistan’s freedom with a fresh pledge to uphold the spirit of the Pakistan Movement, striving to transform the nation into a true Islamic welfare state. The day began with a 31-gun salute in the federal capital and a 21-gun salute in provincial capitals. Special prayers for peace, unity, and prosperity were offered in mosques across the country.
The main event was a national flag-hoisting ceremony in Islamabad, attended by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Similar ceremonies took place in provincial, divisional, and district headquarters. At exactly 7:58 AM, sirens blared nationwide, signaling the grand flag-hoisting ceremony at 8 AM.
Independence Day celebrations included change of guard ceremonies at the mausoleums of Allama Iqbal in Lahore and Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah in Karachi. Authorities in major cities have planned various programs to celebrate Independence Day in the most fitting manner.
The nation is enjoying a public holiday today, with numerous public and private sector departments hosting special functions and activities. These include seminars, discussions, photographic exhibitions, artistic displays, national song performances, and debate competitions, all reflecting on the achievements made 77 years ago.
The spotlight on Independence Day is on acknowledging the relentless efforts of the leaders of the Pakistan Movement, as well as the sacrifices made by national heroes and ordinary citizens who fought for sovereignty and self-determination.
Streets and avenues in the federal capital and other cities are adorned with vibrant colors, particularly green, as people decorate their homes, cars, and neighborhoods with flags, banners, and buntings, creating a festive atmosphere that is much needed.
Independence Day sees prominent public and private buildings illuminated to mark this significant occasion. Police nationwide have finalized traffic management plans to ensure the safety and convenience of the public as they gather in parks, malls, markets, and beaches to celebrate. Children, the nation’s biggest asset, are particularly excited, embracing the festive spirit.
Cities are awash in green and white, with Jashan-i-Azadi stalls offering a variety of patriotic items like dresses, flags, and toys, attracting both youngsters and children. Brands, online retailers, eateries, cab services, and electronics companies have joined the celebration by offering special discounts, adding to the joyful atmosphere.
President Asif Ali Zardari congratulated the nation on Independence Day, emphasizing the need for unity, integrity, and economic stability. He called for following Quaid-e-Azam’s teachings, investing in youth and women, and reaffirmed support for Kashmiris and Palestinians.
In his message, the president highlighted that Pakistan’s creation through peaceful means is a unique chapter in history, paying tribute to the leaders and workers of the Pakistan Movement. He stressed the importance of unity, integrity, and economic stability to tackle current challenges.
Zardari noted that Pakistan is rich in human and natural resources, urging their use for the welfare of the people. He also emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law, strengthening democratic institutions, and working in the public interest to meet the nation’s expectations.
The president urged the nation to draw inspiration from Quaid-e-Azam’s leadership, focusing on the well-being of the masses and the poor. He highlighted the need to invest in youth and women, enhance service delivery, and create a business-friendly environment to build a stronger nation. Zardari also expressed solidarity with the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir and Palestine, reaffirming Pakistan’s support for their legitimate rights.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in his Independence Day message, vowed to work collectively for an inclusive and prosperous Pakistan. He highlighted that the government’s efforts for economic growth and stability are beginning to show positive results, with inflation dropping from 38% to 11.1% in July.
The prime minister paid homage to the immense sacrifices of the forefathers and heroes of the Pakistan Movement, which led to the creation of an independent Pakistan on August 14, 1947. He expressed confidence that the nation would unite to benefit the citizens.
Shehbaz Sharif also acknowledged the key role of overseas Pakistanis in the country’s progress, calling them true ambassadors of Pakistan. He expressed gratitude to the armed forces for protecting the country’s borders and sovereignty.
The prime minister reiterated Pakistan’s continuous support for the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu & Kashmir and Palestine in their fight for self-determination. He emphasized that Pakistan stands at a crossroads, facing economic challenges like inflation, high-energy costs, unemployment, and debt, but remains focused on creating conditions for growth and stability.
Shehbaz Sharif highlighted Pakistan’s rich natural resources and youthful workforce as key assets, with the government taking steps to attract investments to boost industrialization and create jobs. The focus on education and skill development will empower the youth in the competitive global economy.
He also mentioned the government’s efforts to digitize the ecosystem, broaden the tax base, and reduce electricity prices, promising results soon.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Russian Ambassador to Pakistan Albert P. Khorev both extended their congratulations on Independence Day, wishing Pakistan prosperity and happiness on this significant occasion.
