NEW DELHI: At least 24 people, mostly children, lost their lives when a fire erupted in a crowded amusement park arcade in India on Saturday, according to officials.
Footage shared on social media depicted a fierce blaze consuming the entire structure, with thick black smoke billowing into the sky.
Prabhav Joshi, the district collector of Rajkot in the western state of Gujarat, informed the media that 24 people, “mostly children,” perished in the fire, and about half a dozen others were hospitalized.
“The police have detained four individuals connected to the gaming zone for questioning,” he stated. “We are working to gather more information about the owners of the establishment.”
Rajkot fire officer Ilesh Kher reported that more than 300 people were inside the two-storey TRP amusement and entertainment park when the fire broke out, as it was a summer holiday weekend.
