India’s preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 have been clouded by escalating tensions between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
Breaking from tradition, the Indian team, led by Rohit Sharma, will not display Pakistan’s name on their jerseys. This unusual step has drawn attention since Pakistan is hosting the tournament.
The move comes amidst worsening political and security disputes between the two neighboring nations. India has also decided to base their team in Dubai instead of Pakistan, citing security concerns in the host country.
PCB Criticizes India-Pakistan Cricket Row
The PCB strongly criticized this decision. A senior PCB official accused the BCCI of using cricket as a political tool. “India’s refusal to play in Pakistan and their decision to exclude their captain from the opening ceremony are direct challenges to the event’s integrity,” the official stated.
The exclusion of Pakistan’s name from India’s jerseys has been viewed as an attempt to undermine the host nation. This break from standard practices has further fueled tensions.
The PCB official warned that such actions could damage the tournament’s spirit. “The BCCI is mixing politics with cricket. They won’t travel to Pakistan, and now they refuse to send their captain for the opening ceremony. Reports suggest they’re also avoiding the display of the host nation’s name on their jerseys. The ICC must intervene to prevent further politicization,” the official added.
High-Stakes Clash Looms
The India-Pakistan cricket row has added drama to the tournament. India’s schedule includes a much-anticipated group-stage match against Pakistan on February 23. Another clash with New Zealand is set for March 2.
This Champions Trophy marks India’s first ICC event since their 2013 victory under MS Dhoni. With rising tensions, the stage is set for an intense competition between the two rivals.
