Hours before Iraq filed a complaint against Iran at the United Nations Security Council, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein strongly condemned Iran’s attack on Irbil. He characterized the escalation as an attempt by Tehran to export its domestic problems.
The remarks were made at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where Hussein stated that Iraq had taken political and diplomatic steps to address the Iranian offensive in Irbil, which resulted in the death of four civilians. He rejected Iran’s claims about the presence of the Israeli Mossad in Iraq.
Hussein linked the offensive in Iraqi Kurdistan to the growing tensions between Tel Aviv and Tehran due to the crisis in Gaza. Regarding Iraq’s interest in the withdrawal of US troops from Iraqi military bases, he mentioned that Baghdad aims to engage in a negotiation process with the US, emphasizing that the US is willing to sit at the table but under normal conditions.
In recent weeks, there has been an escalation against US forces in Iraq, with the US responding by targeting the headquarters of Iraqi factions closely aligned with Iran.
The US condemned Iranian strikes in Pakistan, Syria, and Iraq, with the State Department expressing concern about Iran violating the sovereign borders of its neighbors. Meanwhile, the Arab League and Arab Parliament strongly denounced Iran’s missile attacks on Erbil, describing them as a flagrant violation of Iraq’s sovereignty. The head of the Arab League extended condolences to the victims’ families and wished a speedy recovery for the injured.
The Arab League’s spokesman emphasized the dangerous nature of the missile strikes amid the ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel in the region.
