The human rights group Hengaw has reported a surge in Iran executions during January 2025. At least 87 prisoners were executed, including eight Afghan citizens. This marks a 17.5 percent rise compared to the same month last year.
On Saturday, 1 February, Hengaw disclosed more details about these Iran executions. Among those executed were 17 Kurdish prisoners, 10 Lur, and 4 Baloch individuals. However, the Iranian government has officially confirmed only three of these executions.
Hengaw, which operates from outside Iran, also revealed that six executions took place secretly. In these cases, the authorities did not inform the prisoners’ families or allow them a final visit, adding to concerns over transparency.
The report outlined the charges against those executed. Thirty-five prisoners were convicted of drug-related offenses, while 50 were found guilty of “premeditated murder.” Two individuals faced execution on charges of “rape.”
The United Nations Human Rights Office previously highlighted a grim pattern. In 2024, at least 901 people were executed in Iran, including 31 women. This continued trend in Iran executions raises alarms among international human rights advocates.
Hengaw’s findings shed light on the harsh realities within Iran’s justice system. The organization continues to monitor and report on these executions, pushing for accountability and human rights in the country.
