ISLAMABAD: Following his termination from basic membership, Sher Afzal Marwat has offered his resignation from his National Assembly seat to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
Earlier, Marwat expressed his respect for the party’s decision in a tweet on X, stating he was and will remain a soldier of Imran Khan and announced to meet him in Adiala Jail to explain the situation.
However, during court proceedings at Adiala Jail on Saturday, where Imran Khan declined to comment on the decision and labeled it as a party matter, Marwat formally offered his resignation. He said that he would decide on his next steps after consulting with local elders from his constituency.
After his expulsion, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), a key ally in the ruling coalition, has extended an invitation to Sher Afzal Marwat to join their ranks.
PPP National Assembly member Makhdoom Jameeluz Zaman issued the invitation, expressing a desire for Marwat to join the PPP under the leadership of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. “Together, they can serve the nation,” Zaman said in a statement released by his spokesperson. He is scheduled to meet with Marwat in Islamabad soon.
The invitation follows PTI’s announcement of Marwat’s expulsion, signed by Additional Secretary General Firdous Shamim Naqvi. This move reportedly surprised PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan. “I’m unaware of who is issuing these instructions and making these decisions. Imran Khan has not informed me of any such directives,” Barrister Gohar commented on Marwat’s termination from the party.
The PTI notification cited Marwat’s failure to adhere to party rules and his detrimental impact on the party’s reputation as reasons for his expulsion. It also suggested that Marwat should resign from his National Assembly seat, which he secured as a PTI candidate, and seek re-election.
Earlier, on May 11, Marwat had received a show-cause notice from PTI Secretary General Omar Ayub Khan for violating the party’s code of conduct, with a request to respond within three days.
