Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the SCO Summit in Beijing. The meeting took place during a joint session involving foreign ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states.
This high-level gathering was hosted under China’s presidency of the regional bloc. The central focus was to deepen regional partnerships and promote cooperation among SCO nations.
President Xi Jinping welcomed all delegates warmly. He emphasized the need to strengthen multilateral cooperation and ensure regional stability through the SCO framework. This group represents the largest population bloc in the Eurasian region.
Ishaq Dar at SCO Summit is leading Pakistan’s delegation to the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers’ meeting currently underway in Tianjin.
Upon arrival in Beijing, Mr. Dar was received by top Chinese foreign ministry officials. Ms. Yu Hong from the Department of Asian Affairs and Pakistan’s Ambassador to China, Khalilur Rehman Hashmi, welcomed him at Beijing International Airport.
This year’s summit runs under the theme “Upholding the Shanghai Spirit: SCO in Action.” Key topics include regional security, counterterrorism strategies, and deeper economic cooperation.
Founded in 2001, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization includes member countries such as China, Russia, Pakistan, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Belarus. One of its main bodies, the Regional Anti-Terrorism Structure (RATS), plays a central role in maintaining security in the region.
During the summit, Ishaq Dar at SCO Summit reiterated Pakistan’s full support for SCO-led initiatives. He stressed Islamabad’s firm commitment to peace, connectivity, and regional prosperity.
Separately, Mr. Dar had a phone call with UN Secretary-General António Guterres. The discussion focused on Pakistan’s current presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
Mr. Dar assured the UN chief of Pakistan’s active commitment to multilateral diplomacy and peaceful conflict resolution. He also shared key plans for Pakistan’s term at the UNSC and promised full cooperation with the UN.
Both leaders agreed to maintain regular contact and meet in New York next week during UNSC-related events. Ishaq Dar at SCO Summit also praised the UN’s humanitarian efforts and peacekeeping roles around the world.
