KARACHI: Following the assassination of Hamas Political Wing Chief Ismail Haniyeh, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has postponed today’s planned protest outside the Sindh Governor’s House.
JI had initially scheduled a sit-in outside the Governor’s House to protest against inflated electricity bills. However, the demonstration has been deferred due to Haniyeh’s assassination in Iran.
Instead, the party will hold a funeral prayer in absentia for Ismail Haniyeh at M.A. Jinnah Road at 5 p.m. today.
Hamas announced on Wednesday that its political leader was killed in an Israeli strike in Iran, where he was attending the inauguration of the country’s new president.
The movement released a statement saying, “Brother, leader, mujahid Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the movement, died in a Zionist strike on his headquarters in Tehran after he participated in the inauguration of the new Iranian president.”
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards confirmed the death, stating that Haniyeh’s residence in Tehran was targeted, resulting in his death along with a bodyguard.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Sepah news website reported, “The residence of Ismail Haniyeh, head of the political office of Hamas Islamic Resistance, was hit in Tehran, resulting in the martyrdom of Haniyeh and one of his bodyguards.”
