Israeli warplanes conducted airstrikes on the Iranian consulate in Damascus on Monday, resulting in the death of a senior commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps, Mohammad Reza Zahedi, as reported by a Lebanese security source to Reuters.
Reporters from Reuters present at the scene in the Mezzeh district of the Syrian capital witnessed smoke rising from the rubble of a flattened building, with emergency vehicles stationed outside.
An Israeli military spokesperson declined to comment on the incident, stating, “We do not comment on reports in the foreign media.”
Syria’s official news agency SANA confirmed that the Israeli attack targeted the Iranian consulate building in the Mazzeh neighborhood of Damascus.
According to Iranian media, the strikes in Damascus completely destroyed the annex building, but the ambassador, Hossein Akbari, and his family emerged unharmed.
Additionally, two AFP correspondents verified that the building adjacent to the embassy had been razed to the ground by the strike.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, based in Britain, reported that “Israeli missiles… destroyed the building of an annex to the Iranian embassy… in Damascus, killing six people.”
Earlier, Syria’s official SANA news agency stated that “our air defense systems confronted enemy targets in the vicinity of Damascus.”
This incident follows recent Israeli strikes reported by the Observatory, which claimed the lives of 53 people in Syria, including 38 soldiers and seven members of the Iran-backed Hezbollah. This toll marks the highest casualty count for the Syrian army in Israeli strikes since the Israel-Hamas war began on October 7, according to the monitor.
