ISLAMABAD: Jailed former Prime Minister has decided to run for the position of Chancellor at Oxford University, confirmed by his team to The Telegraph.
Imran Khan, who is currently incarcerated at the Adiala Jail for almost a year upon and faces over 200 cases, studied Economics and Politics at Keble College, Oxford in 1972,
The Chancellorship became vacant following the resignation of Lord Patten, former governor of Hong Kong and Tory Party chairman, who held the position for 21 years. This year, the election process will move online, departing from the traditional in-person voting by graduates in full academic attire.
Khan is contesting despite facing incarceration on charges related to inciting protests and violence against the Pakistani military, charges he denies.
Zulfi Bukhari, Khan’s advisor on international media, stated, “Imran Khan will contest for the chancellor of Oxford University as there is a public demand that he should contest.” Bukhari added that once Khan approves his candidacy, they will launch a signature campaign.
Although Khan’s prospects for winning seem slim, he faces strong competition from other notable figures, including former British Prime Ministers Sir Tony Blair and Boris Johnson.
