Days after the arrest of former Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Lieutenant General (retd) Faiz Hamid by the Pakistan Army, PTI founder Imran Khan has distanced himself from the retired general.
Speaking to journalists at Adiala Jail, the incarcerated PTI leader emphasized that he had no connection with General Faiz and welcomed the military’s internal accountability process. Khan urged that the accountability process should be across the board.
Khan revealed that during his tenure as prime minister, he was reluctant to remove General Faiz from his post due to the situation in Afghanistan. He mentioned that General Faiz had strong ties with the Afghan Taliban and was instrumental in arranging meetings between Khan, the US envoy on Afghanistan’s peace process, and Taliban representatives.
The former premier also claimed that he had disagreements with then-Army Chief General (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa over the removal of General Faiz, accusing Bajwa of removing him for the sake of his own extension and holding him responsible for the rise in terrorism in the country.
Khan also commented on the ongoing investigations, including the arrest of three more retired officers in connection with a land-grabbing case linked to General Faiz, and demanded an inquiry into allegations that the retired general was involved in the May 9 riots.
