ISLAMABAD: The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) has approved the appointment of 10 additional judges for the Peshawar High Court (PHC), exceeding the initial recommendation of nine. The meeting was presided over by Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi.
The Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court had recommended the appointment of 10 judges, which was ultimately approved by the commission. The names of the newly appointed judges are Abdul Fayyaz, Aurangzeb, Farah Jamshed, Qazi Jawad, Ahsanullah, Sibt Ullah Khan, Sadiq Ali, Salhuddin, Mudassir Amir, and Tariq Afridi.
Sources indicate that the decision to appoint 10 judges was approved by a majority vote. However, some members expressed dissent, arguing that the agenda had originally listed only nine additional judges, and thus approving 10 judges was not in line with the scheduled agenda.
Additionally, the JCP’s meeting to discuss the appointment of Supreme Court judges has been postponed to February 10, 2025. The meeting, initially scheduled for February 11, will focus on the potential elevation of High Court judges to the Supreme Court, with eight new appointments expected to be discussed.
Earlier this month, two new appointments were made to the Islamabad High Court (IHC): District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Azam Khan and Advocate Supreme Court Raja Inam Ameen Minhas. In Balochistan High Court (BHC), three justices—Justice Muhammad Asif, Justice Muhammad Ayub Khan Tareen, and Najam-ud-Din Mengal—were appointed after serving as Supreme Court advocates.
