ISLAMABAD: Justice Yahya Afridi, nominated by the Special Parliamentary Committee (SPC), was sworn in as Pakistan’s 30th Chief Justice on Saturday. President Arif Alvi administered the oath at a ceremony held at Aiwan-i-Sadr in Islamabad, attended by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, parliamentarians, and Supreme Court judges. Chief Ministers and Governors from all provinces, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s CM Ali Amin Gandapur, were also present.
The event commenced with a recitation from the Holy Quran, followed by the formal reading of the notification for Justice Afridi’s appointment, after which the president administered the oath.
Who is Justice Yahya Afridi?
Following the 26th Amendment, the SPC now recommends the Chief Justice from among the three most senior Supreme Court judges. Justice Afridi, third on the seniority list, was appointed under this amendment, while senior puisne judge Mansoor Ali Shah was previously considered.
Justice Afridi’s appointment was officiated by President Asif Ali Zardari per the Ministry of Law and Justice’s notification under Article 175A and Articles 177 and 179 of the Constitution.
