Karachi Electric (K-Electric) consumers may face another round of adversity as authorities gear up for a second price hike in a single quarterly adjustment.
K-Electric has formally requested the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to approve an additional increase of Rs3.02 per unit for electricity consumers. NEPRA is set to review and consider the utility’s request today.
The proposed hike pertains to quarterly adjustments for the period of April to June 2023. Notably, a prior government request has already resulted in a Rs3.28 per unit increase for Karachi during the April to June quarter this year.
Following the NEPRA hearing, the regulatory decision will be forwarded to the federal government for approval. Once sanctioned by the federal government, the proposed increase will be implemented for K-Electric consumers.
In a previous development on October 15, K-Electric had submitted an application to NEPRA seeking a Rs2.35 per unit increase in quarterly adjustments. The application also suggested an additional hike of 67 paisas per unit in arrears. If approved, this would impose an extra financial burden of Rs1.6 billion on the electricity consumers of Karachi.
