A powerful gas leak explosion in a residential building in Gul Runa Colony, Soldier Bazaar, Karachi, has left at least 15 people dead — including children — and 13 others injured, authorities confirmed on Thursday.
The blast occurred near Aga Khan School in Street No. 05 during early morning hours around Sehri. According to officials, the explosion caused the roof to collapse, trapping residents under the rubble and triggering panic in the densely populated neighborhood.
Rescue teams, including ambulances and volunteers from Edhi Foundation, rushed to the scene immediately and launched a search and rescue operation. The injured and deceased were shifted to Civil Hospital Karachi, where emergency treatment is ongoing.
Eyewitnesses said the intensity of the blast was so strong that nearby buildings shook, spreading fear across the area.
Police officials said the incident took place at around 4:15am. Preliminary findings suggest the explosion occurred on the first floor due to gas leakage. The structure, reportedly built on a small plot with multiple rooms, partially collapsed, making rescue efforts difficult due to limited space.
Authorities also noted that the building may have been an illegal structure, and investigations are underway to determine the exact cause and fix responsibility.
Officials fear that one or two more people could still be trapped under the debris as clearance operations continue.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and directed authorities to ensure the best medical care for the injured. Provincial minister Sharjeel Inam Memon termed the incident tragic and called for a detailed inquiry.
Authorities have urged residents to stay away from the site to avoid hindering rescue operations.
