Karachi’s biggest heist: Thieves tunnel into jewellery shop, steal gold worth Rs300 million

In one of the largest theft incidents in the city’s history, burglars broke through the wall of a jewellery shop in Karachi and stole gold and diamonds worth more than Rs300 million, police said on Sunday.

The incident took place in Orangi Town’s Iqbal Market area, where unknown suspects carried out a major burglary by digging through the rear wall of the shop.

According to the FIR, the suspects fled with around 606 tolas of gold and diamonds worth over Rs2.5 million. The stolen items also included jewellery belonging to customers.

The shop owner, Ayub Khan, told police that workers had closed the shop as usual on the night of February 12. However, when staff reopened the store on the morning of February 14, they found several jewellery boxes empty.

Upon inspection, the rear wall was discovered broken, confirming that the suspects had entered through a tunnel.

CCTV footage of the burglary has surfaced, showing a suspect attempting multiple times to squeeze through a hole in the wall. The footage suggests the intruder knew the camera positions, as he quickly covered the camera after entering.

Police registered a case against unknown suspects and launched an investigation.

Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hasan Lanjar sought a detailed report from SSP West and directed authorities to form special teams for the arrest of those involved and recovery of stolen goods.

He also ordered stricter security measures for jewellery markets and sensitive commercial areas across the city.

Officials said forensic evidence and CCTV analysis are being used to track the suspects.
