KP to make new mining policy to ensure safety of miners: Shaukat Yousafzai


PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) government Friday decided to draft a new Mining Policy to ensure safety of mine labourer working under very harsh and dangerous conditions, said Shaukat Yousafzai, leader ofPTI and Member Provincial Assembly (MPA) of KP.
After the recent incidents of coal mine blasts ensuing in deaths of several workers belonging to KPK, it has been decided to pass a new law which should ensure proper safety of mine workers, ShaukatYousafzai said.
Talking to APP, Yousafzai said the prevailing colonial era mining laws and not giving proper security to laborers while the punishment for mine owners over lapse in adopting of safety measures are veryminimal.The new law, he continued, would cover the loopholes in the existing law and ensure implementation of proper safety measures in mining industry.
Similarly, proper amount would also be decided as compensation in case of death or injury of labours, he added. Shaukat Yousafzai said still a number of compensation cases are pending in Baluchistan and Sindprovinces where majority of coal mines are located.He lamented that government is paying only Rs. 300,000 as compensation to the heirs of dead, but this payment is also delayed for months and years.
Shaukat disclosed that majority of the mine workers in Pakistan are from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Only in Shangla district, where Shaukat Yousafzai also belongs, around 35000 dwellers are working as mine workers in different mines of Pakistan, constituting 70 percent of total mine workers of the country.He said a large number of dwellers of Shangla have died in different incidents of coal mine accidents while scores of others have been disabled due to serious injuries mostly spinal cord injury.He said he has discussed the issue with Prime Minister, Imran Khan who has giveninstruction for working over the new law and Chief Minister KP, Mahmood Khan is also taking interest in it.Shaukat expressed the hope that soon the new policy would be drafted and passed from KP assembly.– APP
