ADDIS ABABA: At least 55 people have died in a landslide in southern Ethiopia, and officials fear the death toll may rise.
Local authorities reported that the landslide occurred in the Gofa region. Rescue teams have recovered 55 bodies so far.
According to officials, the landslide was triggered by heavy rains yesterday. When local residents and police personnel arrived at the scene to assist those trapped, a second landslide occurred.
The second landslide buried many of the people who had come to help, officials said. With 55 bodies recovered so far, the death toll is expected to increase.
Relief efforts are ongoing at the site of the disaster.
