ISLAMABAD: Today is the last day for candidates to finalize their political affiliations, with the deadline set at midnight for independent contenders.
As per constitutional regulations, independent candidates have until midnight to make their decision regarding party alignment, with a provision allowing them to join any parliamentary party within three days after notification by the Election Commission of Pakistan. Failure to do so will categorize them as independents.
The Election Commission Facilitation Center is prepared to assist candidates during this crucial period, operating until the deadline.
Independent candidates must submit an affidavit along with a letter from the respective party leader, confirming their allegiance. Concurrently, political parties can submit candidate lists accompanied by relevant affidavits to the Election Commission.
In a significant development, a considerable number of independent candidates have already affiliated themselves with established political entities. Specifically, 82 victorious independent candidates from National Assembly constituencies have opted to align with the Sunni Ittehad Council, while nine successful independents from Sindh Assembly seats have pledged support to the same.
Constitutional experts highlight the implications of such alliances, stressing that even joining a relatively minor parliamentary faction can enhance numerical strength and secure reserve seats for women or non-Muslim representatives in the National Assembly.
Moreover, Pakistan’s constitution grants independent candidates a significant role in the parliamentary process. They retain the authority to influence the selection of the Prime Minister, irrespective of party affiliation, within the Lower House of Parliament.
As the deadline approaches, the political landscape anticipates potential realignments and strategic maneuvers, with independent candidates playing a pivotal role in shaping parliamentary dynamics.
