The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday directed all concerned government departments to submit comprehensive reports on the implementation of anti-smog measures by November 12, as part of ongoing efforts to tackle worsening air quality in the city.
Justice Shahid Karim issued the directive while hearing multiple petitions related to smog prevention and environmental protection. During the hearing, officials from several departments appeared before the court, while a representative of the Judicial Water and Environmental Commission presented findings highlighting that heavy traffic in Lahore increases significantly after 11pm, aggravating the city’s smog levels.
The DIG Motorway Police informed the court that the department had previously supported pilot projects to control emissions and stood ready to assist in the current anti-smog initiatives. Justice Karim acknowledged the cooperation but warned that Lahore’s air quality would not improve until strict and effective vehicle inspection systems were enforced.
The court also raised concerns over the Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) allowing restaurants and barbecue setups inside public parks. Justice Karim asked the PHA to submit details about how much parkland had been converted for commercial use. The PHA’s counsel assured the court that an inspection would be conducted and a report submitted before the next hearing.
However, Justice Karim issued a stern warning, stating: “If the aim is just to make money, then we might as well cut down all of Lahore’s trees — this approach is unacceptable.” He stressed that protecting green spaces is vital to combating smog and preserving the environment.
Emphasizing the need for concrete and result-oriented actions, Justice Karim instructed departments to focus on stricter traffic control, comprehensive vehicle inspections, and proper regulation of nighttime heavy transport. The court reiterated that environmental degradation and unchecked commercialisation of green zones would not be tolerated.
All departments were ordered to submit their detailed implementation reports by November 12, as the LHC continues to monitor progress on anti-smog measures in Lahore.
