LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has nullified the appointment of Lieutenant General (Retired) Munir Afsar as Chairman of the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA).
On Friday, the court upheld a petition challenging Afsar’s appointment, ruling in favor of the petitioner. Justice Asim Hafeez announced the verdict after hearing arguments from both sides. The petitioner, a woman, argued that Afsar’s appointment was illegal and unconstitutional.
Lt Gen Munir Afsar had been appointed as NADRA Chairman on October 2 of the previous year. The federal cabinet approved his appointment from a list of three candidates proposed by the Ministry of Interior.
The cabinet was informed that a selection committee had shortlisted the three most qualified candidates for the position. After thorough consideration, the cabinet approved Afsar’s appointment as NADRA Chairman.
Lt Gen Munir Afsar appointment followed the resignation of the previous NADRA Chairman, Tariq Malik, who stepped down after meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Malik had been under investigation by the Federal Investigation Agency for alleged corruption.
Malik had initially been appointed as NADRA Chairman on June 21 during the PTI government and had previously served in the role.
