Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has received the prestigious UN Habitat Scroll of Honour Award in Oman for the province’s flagship Apni Chhat Apna Ghar housing initiative.
The international recognition highlights the Punjab government’s efforts to provide affordable housing to eligible citizens and help low-income families move from rented accommodation or informal settlements into homes of their own.
Maryam Nawaz UN Habitat Award Recognises Housing Vision
The Apni Chhat Apna Ghar programme was formally launched on August 21, 2024. The initiative aims to provide houses and apartments to eligible residents across Punjab over a four-and-a-half-year period.
The project has attracted international attention for its focus on affordable housing and improving living conditions for families with limited financial resources.
Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb described the Maryam Nawaz UN Habitat Award as a historic and emotional achievement for Punjab and Pakistan.
In a post on X, Aurangzeb said the honour represented global recognition of the chief minister’s vision and commitment to providing ordinary families with secure homes, dignity and better prospects.
According to Aurangzeb, more than 200,000 homes have already been delivered across Punjab under the housing initiative. She said the programme was helping create greater security, safety and opportunities for families and future generations.
The senior minister also expressed pride that the vision of the Punjab chief minister had received recognition at the international level.
Aurangzeb further praised Maryam Nawaz for providing not only housing but also hope and dignity to people across the province, concluding her message with appreciation for the chief minister’s efforts.
Punjab Leaders Praise Apni Chhat Apna Ghar
Punjab Education Minister Sikander Hayat also welcomed the international recognition and praised Maryam Nawaz for her housing vision.
He additionally acknowledged Housing Minister Bilal Yaseen for his role in implementing the programme, highlighting his commitment, dedication and sense of responsibility.
Hayat said the award was a significant acknowledgement of the effort and determination behind the chief minister’s housing initiative.
According to the official Apni Chhat Apna Ghar website, the programme is designed particularly to assist low-income residents who are living in rented homes or informal settlements. The initiative seeks to help eligible families secure their own houses and improve their long-term living conditions.
