May 9 cases have become a focal point of controversy as Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), filed a petition in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday. He is challenging the transfer of these cases to military courts. The plea was submitted by his lawyer, Aziz Karamat Bhandari, naming the secretary law, secretary home, IG Islamabad, IG Punjab, IG Jails, DG FIA, and the federal government as respondents.
Imran Khan has requested the court to stop the transfer of the May 9 cases to military courts for trial. Earlier in August, while incarcerated, the PTI leader expressed willingness to offer a conditional apology for the riots that erupted on May 9.
Speaking to the media at Adiala Jail, Imran Khan stated that the footage of the incidents should be used to identify those responsible. He emphasized that these individuals should face justice. “If it turns out that the culprits are linked with PTI, I will not only remove them from the party but also apologize,” he declared.
The PTI founder insisted that his party is the “victim” in the events of May 9, questioning why the evidence related to the incidents is being kept hidden. “Hiding evidence is a crime,” he stated firmly.
Imran Khan also alleged that he was “kidnapped” under the guise of an arrest. He demanded that those involved in what he called his “abduction” should offer an apology to him.
The May 9 cases continue to be a contentious issue, with Imran Khan’s legal challenge adding another layer of complexity to an already charged political landscape.
