Kylian Mbappe has opened up about France’s World Cup exit, pointing to tactical and technical shortcomings after Les Bleus fell 2-0 to Spain in the semi-final. The result brought an abrupt end to a tournament in which the French captain had been in electric form.
Mbappe had been among the standout performers of the competition, scoring eight goals as France powered through to the last four with an attack that captivated fans across the globe. However, his hopes of leading France to a third consecutive World Cup final were dashed as Spain took control of the contest at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Mbappe Calls Defeat a “Huge Disappointment”
Speaking to French broadcaster M6, the 27-year-old Real Madrid forward admitted the result had hit the squad hard. He said the team failed to deliver the performance they had planned, whether in tactics, technical execution, or overall intensity.
“When you don’t do what you’re supposed to do in a World Cup semi-final, you don’t win,” Mbappe said, adding that France’s strategy of pressing high up the pitch to disrupt Spain’s rhythm simply didn’t come off.
Midfield Battle Proved Decisive
According to Mbappe, the turning point came in the middle of the park. France’s pairing of Adrien Rabiot and Aurelien Tchouameni struggled to contain Spain’s midfield trio of Rodri, Dani Olmo, and Fabian Ruiz.
Key issues Mbappe highlighted included:
- France being consistently outnumbered 3-on-2 in midfield
- An inability to press effectively and disrupt Spain’s controlled buildup
- Spain’s superior game management once they settled into their rhythm
“When you put it all together, the result is a defeat,” he said. “It’s a huge disappointment.”
Looking Ahead After the World Cup Exit
Despite the heartbreak, Mbappe insisted the squad would hold their heads high following the loss. He described reaching the semi-final as a dream that had given the nation a reason to believe history could be made.
“I believe that when you win, you win with your head held high; so when you lose, you have to lose with your head held high, too,” he said, acknowledging that the scale of disappointment was difficult to put into words.
Mbappe added that the players now face the task of regrouping, taking a break, and refocusing for what comes next, noting that football “waits for no one.
