Melbourne: Melbourne Renegades’ management has issued an apology to Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan after controversially calling him back during a Big Bash League (BBL) match, sources have confirmed.
According to sources, the team’s captain Will Sutherland and the coaching staff personally apologized to Rizwan following the incident. Sutherland reportedly told the Pakistani cricketer that the match was at a very intense stage and admitted regret over his conduct.
“I am ashamed of my behaviour. You are a great player and people love you,” the Renegades captain was quoted as saying.
Sources said Rizwan had expressed strong displeasure to the management over the decision, which led to internal discussions within the team.
It may be recalled that during a Big Bash League match, Mohammad Rizwan was retired out by Melbourne Renegades due to a low strike rate, a move that sparked widespread criticism on social media. Fans and former cricketers questioned the decision, calling it disrespectful to a player of Rizwan’s stature and experience.
The incident triggered a strong reaction from Pakistani cricket fans, many of whom defended Rizwan’s record and contribution, both in international cricket and franchise leagues.
Following the backlash, the Renegades’ apology is being seen as an attempt to ease tensions and acknowledge the handling of the situation, as Rizwan continues to remain one of Pakistan’s most respected and popular cricketers.
