In a strategic move to combat the soaring costs of delivering artificial intelligence services, Microsoft unveiled a groundbreaking pair of custom-designed computing chips at its Ignite developer conference in Seattle. This bold initiative follows the trend set by major tech firms, opting to bring essential technologies in-house.
The first of these chips, named Maia, is not intended for sale but rather to fuel Microsoft’s subscription software offerings and play a pivotal role in the Azure cloud computing service. Tailored to accelerate AI computing tasks, Maia lays the foundation for Microsoft’s innovative $30-a-month “Copilot” service, catering to business software users and developers seeking to craft custom AI services.
Specifically designed to power large language models, Maia is the result of Microsoft’s collaboration with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT.
