Military courts: Parliamentary committee briefed on draft constitutional amendment, NAP

ISLAMABAD: The parliamentary committee Thursday failed to take final decision about revival of military courts as political parties would consult their leadership before next meeting on February 27.
Speaker National Assembly Ayaz chaired a meeting of the parliamentary parties on Thursday. The government representatives briefed the participants of the meeting.
According to Shah Mehmood Qureshi, all the parliamentary parties would consult their leadership after today’s briefing and next meeting would be held on February 27. Qureshi said that the government has failed to required steps for implementation of the National Action Plan.
Naveed Qamar of PPP told the newsmen that PPP has rejected the draft constitutional amendment for revival of the military courts. He said that he would brief the party leadership about the constitutional amendment.
He said that the opposition and treasury members agreed on formation of parliamentary committee on national security, which was demanded by PPP Chief Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
The government representatives briefed the meeting about implementation of the National Action plan and handed over draft constitutional amendment for military courts revival to participants. The political parties would consult their leadership about the draft and inform the parliamentary parties committee on February 27.
According to reports, a sub-committee was formed which would finalise draft law for revival of the military courts. Federal minister Zahid Hamid would head the sub-committee comprising Shireen Mazari, Shahzia Marri, Naeema Kishwar and S Iqbal Qadri. The committee would meet on February 22, which would prepare draft constitutional amendment and law for the revival of the military courts.
Talking to newsmen after the meeting, National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq said the government and the opposition have constituted a sub-committee to further discuss the bill.
He said the opposition parties will share the bill with their leadership before the next meeting, which will be held on 27th of this month.
According to reports, the government wanted to extend the military courts for three years, while the opposition was not ready to extend the military courts for three years.
